Crochet materials and tools:

Crochet hook 4.5 mm (for the main front and back parts and side ribbing); 5 mm (specifically for the neck part).

Red Heart, Comfort (4) –100% acrylic. Quantity: 185 grams.

Yarn needle or tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends.

Crochet turtleneck dickey size:

Size: Any medium-weight yarn will work for a standard adult size.  To make the size smaller, use a lighter yarn and a smaller hook without changing the pattern counts. The pattern will include instructions for a large size.

Common abbreviations of crochet stitches (US):

ch – chain

sl st – slip stitch

Yo sl st – Yarn Over Slip Stitch: Yarn over and insert the hook into the next stitch. Yarn over again and pull up a loop (you now have 3 loops on the hook). Pull the first loop through the other two loops on the hook in one motion, just like a regular slip stitch.

BLO – back loop only (Work stitches through the back loop unless otherwise noted).

Assembly and Neck

1. Seaming: Using the yarn tails, sew the shoulder seams by matching the corresponding stitches from the front and back pieces. Identify the right sides by checking the V-stitch rows, making sure the V-stitches are not upside down.

2. Neck:

Switch to a 5 mm hook. Attach yarn at the left shoulder seam.

Foundation: Chain 26.

Row 1: Yo sl st in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain across – 24 chs.

Join: Yo, insert hook into the last chain, then insert the hook into the space between the V-stitch rows along the neckline. Yo and pull through all the loops. Sl st into the center of the next V-stitch. Turn (do not ch 1).

Row 2: Skip the last sl st of the previous row. Sl st BLO in each of the 25 sts, turn. (25)

Row 3: Ch 1, Yo sl st BLO in next 24 sts. 

Join: Yo, insert hook into last st, insert hook between V-stitch rows on neckline,  yo and pull through all loops. Sl st into the center of the next V-stitch. (do not ch 1). Turn.

Row 4: Skip the last sl st of the previous row. Sl st BLO in each of the 25 sts, turn. (25)

Repeat: Alternate Rows 3 and 4 around the entire neckline until you reach the start.

Seam: Pull the last loop through the first stitch of the foundation chain. Place the working yarn under this loop (inside).

*Insert the hook from back to front into the stitch of the foundation chain in the fabric farther from you, then insert the hook from front to back under the back loop of the stitch in the fabric closer to you. Yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook.

Side Ribbing:

Switch back to the 4.5 mm hook. Attach yarn at the side corner (bottom edge).

Foundation: Chain 7.

Row 1: Sl st in 2nd chain from hook and in each ch across – 5 chs. Join: Insert hook into the next chain, then into the next stitch along the side body. Yo and pull through all the loops. Sl st into the next stitch. Turn.

Row 2: Skip last sl st of the previous row. Yo sl st BLO in next 6 sts. Note: Work the last stitch underneath both loops (not BLO). Turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, Sl st BLO in next 5 stitches. Join: Insert the hook into the next st, then into the next stitch along the side body. Yo and pull through all the loops. Sl st into the next stitch. Turn.

Row 4: Skip last sl st of the previous row. Yo sl st BLO in next 6 sts.  Note: Work the last stitch underneath both loops (not BLO). Turn.

Repeat: Continue repeating Rows 3 and 4 along the edge. Repeat the ribbing on the second side.

Finish: Weave in all ends.
