Textured Checkerboard Crochet Scarf Pattern

Crochet materials and tools:
Crochet hook 5 mm (H/8) or the size suitable for your yarn.
Knit it, Super Soft Yarn (4) – 100% acrylic. 120 g -224 m per skein. Quantity: 425 grams.
Crochet textured checkerboard scarf size:
Size: 183 cm (72 in) long x 22.5 cm (9 in) wide, excluding fringes.

The scarf is worked lengthwise. This diagram shows only a section of the scarf pattern. The total number of squares along the scarf must be odd (you start and finish with the same pattern). My scarf consists of 21 squares in length and 3 sections in width. If you want to adjust the size of the square, make sure each square has an even number of stitches – 14 sts per square in my case.
If you are using a different yarn weight, you can crochet a small 3×3 square swatch to check your gauge.

Gauge: 16.5 sts by 18.5 rows = 4 x 4 in (10 x 10 cm)
Calculating the length of the scarf:
For example I want my scarf 180 cm length
180 x 1.65 = 297 sts
Let adjust: each square consists of 14 sts. 297/14 = 21.21 squares. Round down to 21 (odd number)
21 x 14 = 294 sts
Calculating the width of the scarf:
22 x 1.85 = 40.7 rows
The scarf consists of 3 sections (lines). Make sure the number of sections is also odd (3, 5, 7, etc).
40.7/3=13.5 row. Round down to 13 rows each section.

Common abbreviations of crochet stitches (US):
ch – chain
sl st – slip stitch
Yo sl st – Yarn Over Slip Stitch: Yarn over and insert the hook into the next stitch. Yarn over again and pull up a loop (you now have 3 loops on the hook). Pull the first loop through the other two loops on the hook in one motion, just like a regular slip stitch.
BLO – back loop only (Work stitches through the back loop unless otherwise noted).
st(s) – stitch(es)
HDC – half double crochet

Textured checkerboard scarf crochet pattern:
Body of the scarf:Â
Chain 294 sts +1.
Row 1: Work into the back bumps of the foundation chain: *yo sl st in each of the next 14 sts, [HDC in next st, sl st in next st] – repeat 7 times. Repeat from * as many times as needed, ending with yo sl st in each of the last 14 sts. Turn.Â
Rows 2-13: Ch 1, *yo sl st BLO in each of the next 14 sts, [HDC in next st, sl st in next st] – repeat 7 times. Repeat from * as many times as needed, ending with yo sl st BLO in each of the last 14 sts. Turn.
Rows 14-26: Ch 1, *[HDC in next st, sl st in next st] – 7 times, yo sl BLO in each of the next 14 sts. Repeat from * as many times as needed, ending with [HDC in next st, sl st in next st] – 7 times.
Rows 27-39: Ch 1, *yo sl st BLO in each of the next 14 sts, [HDC in next st, sl st in next st] – repeat 7 times. Repeat from * as many times as needed, ending with yo sl st BLO in each of the last 14 sts. Turn.

Fringes:
Optionally add fringe to the scarf. To make the fringe, cut 3 or more strands of yarn approximately 30 cm (12 in) long, fold the strands in half and attach them along the scarf edge. Repeat spacing the fringe evenly along the edge.
Finish: Weave in all ends.
