Crochet Spiral Granny Square Pattern

Crochet tools and materials:
<> Crochet hook 4 mm
<> Soft & Shiny, Loop & Threads (4), 100% Acrylic.
<> Stitch marker, scissors.
Spiral granny square size:
Square size: 10*10 cm (4*4 in)
Common abbreviations of crochet stitches:
ch – chain
SC– single crochet
HDC – half double crochet
BCDC – back post double crochet: yarn over, insert the hook from back to front and then from front to back (around the post), yarn over and pull up a loop. Now you have 3 loops on your hook. Yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through 2 loops again. You have just completed BPDC.
sl st – slip stitch
DC – double crochet
st(s) – stitch(es)
Spiral granny square crochet pattern:
Crochet a spiral:
Start with a magic ring:
Round 1: Ch 3, 8 DC into magic ring. (8 sts)
Do not join as we are going to work in a spiral, but every round place a stitch marker in your 1st stitch.
Round 2: 2 BPDC in each DC of previous round (16 sts) Do not slip stitch and continue.
Round 3: BPDC in 1st BPDC of previous round, 2 BPDC in next BPDC of previous round, * BPDC in next BPDC of previous round, 2 BPDC in next BPDC of previous round – repeat from * around (24 sts). Do not slip stitch and continue.
Round 4: BPDC in 1st BPDC of previous round, BPDC in next BPDC of previous round, 2 BPDC in next BPDC of previous round, * BPDC in next 2 BPDC of previous round, 2 BPDC in next BPDC of previous round – repeat from * around (32 sts).
Do not slip stitch and continue.
Round 5: BPDC in 1st BPDC of previous round, BPDC in next 2 BPDC of previous round, 2 BPDC in next BPDC of previous round, * BPDC in next 3 BPDC of previous round, 2 BPDC in next BPDC of previous round – repeat from * around (40 sts). Make the last BPDC around the post of BPDC in Round 3. Join with sl st in 1st st. This will help us turn the spiral into a circle.
Turning a spiral into a square:
Change color if needed or go on squaring using the main color.
Ch3, DC in the same stitch as joining ch 2, DC into the same stitch, DC in next st, HDC in next st, SC in next 5 sts, HDC in next st, DC in next st, * [DC, ch2, DC] – in next st, DC in next st, HDC in next st, SC in next 5 sts, HDC in next st, DC in next st – repeat from * 3 times. Close round with sl st in 1st DC.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
