Crochet modern textured hat size:

Head circumference: 53-58 cm (21-23 in)

Gauge: 16-17 sts – 10 cm (4 in)

Men’s modern textured hat crochet pattern:

Chain 47.

Measure your chain. For a hat with a folded brim, the chain should measure approximately 31–33 cm. If 47 chains are not enough, add more chains to reach the required length.

Row 1: Starting into the 2nd ch from hook HDC in the next 38 chains. The length of the last 8 unworked chains must measure 5-6 cm. Sl st in the next 4 chains (half the number of unworked stitches). Turn.   

Note: You can have more or fewer unworked stitches, as long as the number is divisible by 2. In this case, it is 8. 

Row 2: ch 1, sl st blo in next 4 sts, [HDC flo in next st, HDC blo in next st] – 11 times, HDC blo in next 16 sts.  Turn. 

Work the last HDC of each even row under both loops to make the edge of the hat firmer and less stretchy. This helps the brim keep its shape over time.

Row 3: ch 1, HDC blo in next 16 sts. [HDC blo in next st, HDC flo in next st] – 11 times. Sl st blo in next 4 sts, sl st in next 4 chains. Turn.

To make a smooth transition, work the first of the last 4 sl sts by inserting the hook into the horizontal bar (the ch-1 of the previous row) and into the next stitch at the same time, yarn over, pull through both loops to complete the slip stitch. Then complete the remaining 3 sl sts as usual.

Thread the yarn tail onto a tapestry needle. Insert the needle through the side loops around the hat’s crown, then pull the yarn tight to close the hole. Fasten off and weave in any remaining ends.
