Crochet Rectangular Basket Pattern

Crochet materials and tools:
<> Crochet hook 8 mm (A 7 mm or 7.5 mm hook can be used as well.)
<> Jersey Knit Material (T-shirt yarn) – 90% cotton, 10% polyester, 200 grams per 1.5 ball.
<> Yarn needle
Crochet rectangular basket size:
19x14x9 cm (7.5×5.5×3.5 in)

Common abbreviations of crochet stitches (US):
ch – chain
SC – single crochet
SCS – center single crochet: insert the hook between the legs of the single crochet in the previous round.
yo – yarn over
sl st – slip stitch
st(s) – stitch(es)

Rectangular basket crochet pattern:
Leave 50-60 cm (20-23 in) tail.
Round 1: Ch 9. Starting into the 2nd ch from the hook SC in next 7 chs, 3 SC into the last ch. Working on the opposite side of the foundation chain, SC in the next 6 chs, 2 SC in the last ch. Join. (18)
How to join the round:
Insert the hook from back to front into the first SC (underneath both loops) and pull the last loop through. Pull the working yarn to make the loop shorter.




Round 2:
Ch 1. Insert the hook between the two legs of the first SC, yo, draw up a loop. Remove the hook from both loops. Reinsert the hook into the drawn-up loop, then into the ch-1 loop, and pull the ch-1 loop through. Mark the resulting stitch as the first SC. SCS in next 6 sts, 3 SCS in next st, SCS in next st, 3 SCS in next st, SCS in next 6 sts, 3 SCS in next st, SCS in next st, 2 SCS into the first SC of the previous round (including the SC already worked, there will be 3 SCS total in this stitch).
Join as explained to the 2nd SC (not the first SC that was marked with a stitch marker). (26)






Round 3:
Ch 1. Insert the hook between the two legs of the first SC, yo, draw up a loop. Remove the hook from both loops. Reinsert the hook into the drawn-up loop, then into the ch-1 loop, and pull the ch-1 loop through. Mark the resulting stitch as the first SC. SCS in next 7 sts, 3 SCS in next st, SCS in next 3 sts, 3 SCS in next st, SCS in next 8 sts, 3 SCS in next st, SCS in next 3 sts, 3 SCS in next st.
Join as explained to the 2nd SC. (34)
Note: For corners with 3 SC in one stitch, place one SC on one side, one SC in the center diagonally, and one SC on the other side to create a corner shape.
Round 4:
Ch 1. Insert the hook between the two legs of the first SC, yo, draw up a loop. Remove the hook from both loops. Reinsert the hook into the drawn-up loop, then into the ch-1 loop, and pull the ch-1 loop through. Mark the resulting stitch as the first SC. SCS in next 8 sts, 3 SCS in next st, SCS in next 5 sts, 3 SCS in next st, SCS in next 10 sts, 3 SCS in next st, SCS in next 5 sts, 3 SCS in next st, SCS in next st.
Join as explained to the 2nd SC. (42)
Round 5:
Ch 1. Insert the hook between the two legs of the first SC, yo, draw up a loop. Remove the hook from both loops. Reinsert the hook into the drawn-up loop, then into the ch-1 loop, and pull the ch-1 loop through. Mark the resulting stitch as the first SC. SCS in next 9 sts, 2 SCS in next st, SCS in next 7 sts, 2 SCS in next st, SCS in next 12 sts, 2 SCS in next st, SCS in next 7 sts, 2 SCS in next st, SCS in next 2 sts.
Join as explained to the 2nd SC. (46)
Return to the tail left at the beginning and use it to close the holes in the center with slip stitches, creating a neat, tight center.
Stop at this point and steam the bottom of the basket carefully to shape it nicely.

Round 6:
Remove the hook from the loop on the hook. Insert the hook through the back ridge of 1 st SC, yo and pull up a loop. Place the original loop back on the hook, yo, and pull through both loops on the hook. Mark this stitch as the first sc of the round.
For the remaining stitches of this round, insert the hook through the back loop and the back ridge at the same time and complete each stitch as a single crochet.


Join: Insert the hook from back to front into the second SC (under both loops) and pull the last loop through. (46)
Round 7:
Remove the hook from the loop. Insert the hook between the two legs of the first SC, place the loop back on the hook, yo, and pull through all loops on the hook. Ch 1. Mark the resulting stitch as the first SC. SCS in each stitch around. Join in the same way as in Round 6.
Rounds 8-12:
Repeat Round 7.
Round 13:
Remove the hook from the loop. Insert the hook between the two legs of the first SC, place the loop back on the hook, yo, and pull through all loops on the hook. Ch 1. Mark the resulting stitch as the first SC. SCS in next 13 sts, ch 7(first handle), skip next 5 sts, SCS in next 18 sts, ch 7(second handle), skip next 5 sts, SCS in next 4 sts. Join.

Round 14:
Remove the hook from the loop. Insert the hook between the two legs of the first SC, place the loop back on the hook, yo, and pull through all loops on the hook. Ch 1. Mark the resulting stitch as the first SC. SCS in each stitch around. Once you reach the ch-7 space reserved for the handles, work 1 SC into each chain stitch. Sl st to 2nd SC to join.
Round 15:
Sl st in each st around. Join. Refer to the video tutorial for instructions on how to join invisibly.
Weave in all ends. Steam the side of the basket giving it a neat, smooth shape.
