Crochet tools and materials:

<> Medium-weight yarn (4), 100% Acrylic.

Common abbreviations of crochet stitches:
ch – chain
sl st – slip stitch
sp – space
yo – yarn over
DC – double crochet
2DCtog – two double crochet together
ESC – extended single crochet: insert hook into stitch and draw up a loop, yo and pull through one loop only, yo and pull through both loops on the hook.
EDC – extended double crochet: yo, insert hook into stitch and draw up a loop, yo and pull through one loop only, [yo and pull through 2 loops] – twice.
HDC – half double crochet

Small-sized sun granny square crochet pattern:
Color A – Start with a magic ring:
Round 1: ch 2, 10 HDC into the magic ring. Close round with sl st in 1st HDC. (10 sts)
Round 2: ch 2, 2 HDC in the same stitch as joining, 2 HDC in each DC around. Close round with sl st in 1st HDC. (20 sts)
Round 3: ch 3, 2DCtog (start 1st DC in the same stitch as joining), ch 3, 2DCtog, DC in next st, ch 3, *2DCtog, ch 3, 2DCtog, DC in next st, ch 3, – repeat from * three times. Close round with sl st in 1st stitch.
Color change: When you complete the stitch, prior to the start of a new color, work the stitch until the last yarn over (or last 2 loops on your hook). On the last yarn over, pick up new color, make yarn over and pull through two last loops. Now you are ready to work with a new color. Carry color that you are not using across top of your row and work stitches around it.
Round 4: Color A: ch3, DC in the same stitch as joining, Color B: 5 HDC in ch-3 sp, Color A: DC2tog, Color B: 5 HDC in ch-3 sp, *Color A: DC in next st, Color B: 5 HDC in ch-3 sp, Color A: DC2tog, Color B: 5 HDC in ch-3 sp – repeat from * three times. Close round with sl st in 1st stitch. Cut Color A.
Round 5: Color B – ch 4, EDC in the same stitch as joining, ch3, EDC in same st, EDC in next st, DC in next st, HDC in next st, ESC in next 5 sts, HDC in next st, DC in next st, EDC in next st, * [EDC ch3, EDC] in next st, EDC in next st, DC in next st, HDC in next st, ESC in next 5 sts, HDC in next st, DC in next st, EDC in next st – repeat from * three times. Close round with sl st in 1st stitch.
Cut the yarn and weave in all ends.
Large-sized crochet sun granny square
Crochet tools and materials:
Crochet hook 4 mm
Medium weight yarn (4), 100% Acrylic.
Color A: yellow, Color B: blue.
Large sun granny square size:
Square size: 13*13 cm (5*5 in)
Common abbreviations of crochet stitches:
ch – chain
3 DC cluster – *yo, insert the hook into stitch, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through two loops – repeat from * 3 times. When you have four loops on your hook, yo and pull through all four loops to complete this cluster stitch.
2 DC cluster – *yo, insert the hook into stitch, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through two loops – repeat from * 2 times. When you have three loops on your hook, yo and pull through all three loops to complete this cluster stitch.
sl st – slip stitch
sp – space
yo – yarn over
SC – single crochet
DC – double crochet
EDC – extended double crochet: yo, insert hook into stitch and draw up a loop, yo and pull through one loop only, [yo and pull through 2 loops] – twice.
HDC – half double crochet

Large-sized sun granny square crochet pattern:
Color A – Start with a magic ring:
Round 1: ch 3, 12 DC into the magic ring. Close round with sl st in 1st DC. (12 sts)
Round 2: ch 1, SC into the same stitch as joining, FPDC around the post of 1st DC, *SC in next DC, FPDC around the post of the same stitch – repeat from * 11 times. Close round with sl st in 1st SC. (24 sts).
Round 3: ch 1, SC into the same stitch as joining, SC in each stitch around. Close round with sl st in 1st SC. (24 sts).
Round 4: ch 2, 2 DC cluster into the same st as joining, ch 3, skip next st, *3 DC cluster in next st, ch 3, skip next st – repeat from * 11 times. Close round with sl st in 1st cluster stitch. (12 cluster sts).
Color change: When you complete the stitch, prior to the start of a new color, work the stitch until the last yarn over (or last 2 loops on your hook). On the last yarn over, pick up a new color, make a yarn over and pull through two last loops. Now you are ready to work with a new color. Carry color that you are not using across the top of your row and work stitches around it.
Round 5: Color A: ch 2, FPDC around the central post of previous cluster, join Color B: 4 DC in ch-3 sp, *Color A: FPDC around the central post of previous cluster, Color B: 4 DC in ch-3 sp – repeat from * 11 times. Do not change color for the very last DC. Close round with sl st in 1st FPDC. Cut Color A.
Round 6: ch 3, [2 EDC, ch 3, 2 EDC] – into the same stitch as joining, DC in next st, HDC in next st, SC in next 10 sts, HDC in next st, DC in next st, *[2 EDC, ch 3, 2 EDC] – in next st, DC in next st, HDC in next st, SC in next 10 sts, HDC in next st, DC in next st – repeat from * 3 times. Close round with sl st in 1st EDC.
Round 7: SC in each stitch around. [2 SC, ch2, 2 SC] – in each corner. Join. (88 SC).
Cut the yarn and weave in all ends.
