Crochet hat’s body:

Ch 50 (+1 extra for turning). Measure your chain. For a hat with a folded brim, the chain should measure approximately 32–34 cm. If 50 chains are not enough, add more chains to reach the required length.

Row 1: Starting into the 2nd ch from hook: 1 SC in next 16 chs, 1 HDC in next 24 chs. The length of the last 10 unworked chains must measure 7–8 cm. Sl st in the next 5 chs (half the number of unworked chains). Turn.

Note: You can have more or fewer unworked stitches, as long as the number is divisible by 2. In this case, it is 10.

Row 2: ch1, sl st blo in next 5 sts, YO sl st in next 24 sts, SC blo in next 16 sts. Turn. The last stitch will always be crocheted under both loops to make the hat’s brim less stretchy.

Row 3: ch 1, SC blo in next 16 sts, HDC blo in next 24 sts, sl st blo in next 10 sts. Turn. Work the first 5 slip stitches as usual. To create a smooth transition between rows, work the next slip stitch by inserting the hook under the horizontal bar (ch 1 from the previous row) and then into the back loop of the next stitch before completing the slip stitch. Continue working the remaining stitches as usual.

Row 4: ch1, sl st blo in next 10 sts, YO sl st in next 24 sts, SC blo in next 16 sts. Turn.

Row 5: ch 1, SC blo in next 16 sts, HDC blo in next 24 sts, sl st blo in next 5 sts. Turn.

Row 6: ch1, sl st blo in next 5 sts, YO sl st in next 24 sts, SC blo in next 16 sts. Turn.

Row 7: ch 1, SC blo in next 16 sts, HDC blo in next 24 sts, sl st blo in next 10 sts. Turn.

Row 8: ch1, sl st blo in next 10 sts, YO sl st in next 24 sts, SC blo in next 16 sts. Turn.

Repeat Rows 5-8 until the width of the hat reaches 42-43 cm. The width may vary depending on your tension or gauge.

Sewing the hat’s edges:

Fold the hat with the wrong side facing out (the foundation chain should be closest to you in this example).

Insert the hook into the first loop of the foundation chain, then into the working loop, and pull the loop through.

*Next, insert the hook into the next loop of the foundation chain, then through the back loop of the stitch on the opposite side. Finish with a slip stitch.

Repeat from * until you reach the end.

Cut the yarn, leaving a 15 cm tail, and pull the tail through the last loop to secure it.

To close the crown of the hat, use a yarn needle to pick up the horizontal bar of the chain-1 stitch at the end of each 4th row. Pull the yarn through to gather and close the crown tightly.
