Flat unisex winter hat crochet pattern:
Ch 50 (+1 extra for turning). Measure your chain. For a hat with a folded brim, the chain should measure approximately 32–34 cm. If 50 chains are not enough, add more chains to reach the required length, ensuring the total number of chains (excluding the turning chain) is even.
Row 1: Starting into the 2nd ch from hook: *sl st in next ch, HDC in next ch, repeat from * until you have 10 stitches left. The length of the last 10 unworked chains must measure 7–8 cm. Sl st in next 5 sts (half the number of unworked stitches). Turn.
Note: You can have more or fewer unworked stitches, as long as the number is divisible by 2. In this case, it is 10.
Row 2: ch1, sl st blo in next 5 sts, * HDC blo in next st, sl st blo in next st, repeat from * across. Turn.
Row 3: ch 1, *sl st in next ch, HDC in next ch, repeat from * until you have 10 stitches unworked. Sl st blo in next 5 sts, Sl st in next 5 ch. Turn.
Row 4: ch1, sl st blo in next 10 sts, *HDC blo in next st, sl st blo in next st, repeat from * across. Turn.
Row 5: ch 1, *sl st in next ch, HDC in next ch, repeat from * until you have 10 stitches left. Sl st in next 5 sts. Turn.
Row 6: ch1, sl st blo in next 5 sts, *HDC blo in next st, sl st blo in next st, repeat from * across. Turn.
Row 7: ch 1, *sl st in next ch, HDC in next ch, repeat from * until you have 10 stitches unworked. Sl st blo in next 10 sts. Turn.
Row 8: ch1, sl st blo in next 10 sts, *HDC blo in next st, sl st blo in next st, repeat from * across. Turn.
Repeat Rows 5-8 until the width of the hat reaches 47-48 cm.
Sewing hats edges:
Fold the hat wrong side out (foundation chain near you in this example).
*Insert the hook into the first loop of the foundation chain and then through the back loop of the stitch on the other side. Finish with a slip stitch. Repeat from * until you reach the end.
Cut the yarn, leaving a 15 cm tail, and pull the tail through the last loop to secure it.
Thread the tail onto a tapestry needle and weave the needle back and forth around the top of the hat. Pull the yarn tight to close the hole. Fasten off and weave in the remaining ends.
