Classic beret crochet pattern:

Chain 41 (+1 extra for turning).

Row 1: Starting into the 2nd ch from hook: *HDC in next ch, sl st in next ch repeat from * until you have 8 stitches left.  Sl st in next 8 chs. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sl st blo in next 8 sts, *HDC blo in next st, sl st blo in next st repeat from * until you have 2 stitches left. The last stitch is always worked as HDC blo. Leave the remaining 2 sts unworked. Turn. (39)

Row 3: Ch 1, *HDC blo in next st, sl st blo in next st repeat from * until you have 8 stitches left.  Sl st blo in next 8 sts. Turn.

Work the very last stitch of each odd row under both loops to make the edge less stretchy.

Row 4: Ch 1, sl st blo in next 8 sts, *HDC blo in next st, sl st blo in next st repeat from * until you have 4 stitches left. The last stitch is always worked as HDC blo. Leave the remaining 4 sts unworked. Turn. (37)

Row 5: Ch 1, *HDC blo in next st, sl st blo in next st repeat from * until you have 8 stitches left.  Sl st blo in next 8 sts. Turn.

Row 6: Ch 1, sl st blo in next 8 sts, *HDC blo in next st, sl st blo in next st repeat from * until you have 6 stitches left. The last stitch is always worked as HDC blo. Leave the remaining 6 sts unworked. Turn. (35)

Row 7: Ch 1, *HDC blo in next st, sl st blo in next st repeat from * until you have 8 stitches left.  Sl st blo in next 8 sts. Turn.

Row 8: Ch 1, sl st blo in next 8 sts, *HDC blo in next st, sl st blo in next st repeat from * until you have 8 stitches left. The last stitch is always worked as HDC blo. Leave the remaining 8 sts unworked. Turn. (33)

Row 9: Ch 1, *HDC blo in next st, sl st blo in next st repeat from * until you have 8 stitches left.  Sl st blo in next 8 sts. Turn.

Row 10: Ch 1, sl st blo in next 8 sts, *HDC blo in next st, sl st blo in next st repeat from * until you have 10 stitches left. The last stitch is always worked as HDC blo. Leave the remaining 10 sts unworked. Turn. (31)

Row 11: Ch 1, *HDC blo in next st, sl st blo in next st repeat from * until you have 8 stitches left. Leave the remaining 8 sts unworked. Turn. (23)

Row 12: Ch 1, *HDC blo in next st, sl st blo in next st repeat from * until you have 12 stitches left. The last stitch is always worked as HDC blo. Leave the remaining 12 sts unworked. Turn. (21)

Row 13: Ch 1, *HDC blo in next st, sl st blo in next st repeat from * until you have 8 stitches left.  Sl st blo in next 8 sts. Turn. (29)

To create a smooth join between short rows and avoid holes, work the first of the last 8 sl sts by inserting the hook into the horizontal bar (the ch-1 of the previous row) and into the next stitch at the same time, yarn over, pull through both loops to complete the slip stitch. Then complete the remaining 7 sl sts as usual.

Row 14: Ch 1, sl st blo in next 8 sts, *HDC blo in next st, sl st blo in next st repeat from * till the end of the row. Turn. (41)

Use the same smooth join method as described above.

The first section of the beret is complete.

the first section of the crochet beret

Crochet a total of 8 sections by repeating Rows 1-14. For the final section do not repeat Row 14 then start seaming the beret.

Assembly: Turn the beret wrong side out. Fold it so the foundation chain edge is closest to you, and the last row and the working yarn are farther from you.

*Insert the hook into the first loop of the foundation chain, then through the back loop of the stitch on the opposite side. Finish with a slip stitch. Repeat from * across.

When you reach short-row turns , join in the same way, but also insert the hook into the horizontal bar as before: Insert the hook into the next loop of the foundation chain, then into the horizontal bar and finally through the back loop of the stitch on the opposite side. Yarn over and pull though all loops on the hook.

closing the crown hole of a crochet classic beret

Cut the yarn, leaving a 10-15 cm (4-6 in) tail. Using a yarn needle, close the crown hole by picking up stitches around it. Pull gently to tighten and close the crown, being careful not to break the yarn. Weave in all ends.

If you find that your beret is slightly too big, don’t worry, there’s an easy fix. Using a 0.6 mm fine elastic sewing thread, you can adjust the fit to suit almost any size. You can find a video tutorial showing how to insert the thread on my blog or Instagram page.
