Flat mittens crochet pattern:

Crochet main part of the mitten:

Start with a slip knot and do not tighten it. Count the slip knot as the first ch. Leaving the slip knot loose helps create a solid beginning without a visible hole. Row 1: Ch 45, then ch 1 extra for turning (46 ch in total). Starting in the 2nd ch from hook, HDC sl st in next 32 ch. Sl st in next 13 ch.

Row 2: Ch 1, sl st blo in next 39 sts. Leave the last 6 sts unworked.

Row 3: Ch 1, HDC sl st blo in next 26 sts, sl st blo in next 13 sts.

Row 4: Ch 1, sl st blo in next 39 sts. To create a smooth transition between rows and avoid holes, *insert the hook under the bar between the last two rows, then into the back loop of the next stitch, yarn over, pull through all 3 loops on the hook, sl st blo. Leave the last 4 sts unworked.

Row 5: Ch 1, HDC sl st blo in next 28 sts, sl st blo in next 13 sts.

Row 6: Ch 1, sl st blo in next 41 sts. To create a smooth transition between rows and avoid holes, *insert the hook under the bar between the last two rows, then into the back loop of the next stitch, yarn over, pull through all 3 loops on the hook, sl st blo. Leave the last 2 sts unworked.

Row 7: Ch 1, HDC sl st blo in next 30 sts, sl st blo in next 13 sts.

Row 8: Ch 1, sl st blo in next 42 sts. Insert the hook through the back loop of the next stitch and simultaneously through the bar. Skip the next stitch, then insert the hook through the back loop of the last stitch. Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops on the hook. Skipping one stitch and joining stitches 43 and 45 together helps create a more rounded mitten tip. The skipped stitches will be added later.

Row 9: Ch 1, HDC sl st blo in next 30 sts, sl st blo in next 13 sts. (43)

Row 10: Ch 1, sl st blo in next 43 sts.

Row 16: Ch 1, sl st blo in next 45 sts. Add the last 6 sl st using the same method as before to create a smooth transition. Add the final 2 sl st along the top edge of the mitten. Fold the thumb with the wrong side facing out and join the two edges together. Insert the hook into the first stitch (thumb) of the foundation chain and into the back loop of the corresponding stitch on the other edge. Yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook. Continue seaming the thumb with a total of 11 slip stitches. Cut the yarn and pull it through the last loop to fasten off. Thread the yarn tail through the stitches around the tip of the thumb and pull tight to close the hole. Turn the thumb right side out, making sure the closed tip is neat and rounded. Attach the yarn at the base, between the thumb and the main part of the mitten, leaving a 20 cm tail. To complete Row 20, add 20 more slip stitches to the 25 you already made, so the row has a total of 45 slip stitches.

Next Row: Ch 1, HDC sl st blo in next 32 stitches (20 HDC sl st blo, then move along the thumb 12 more HDC sl st blo), sl st blo in next 13 sts.

Repeat Rows 2-19.

Sewing the mitten

Fold the mitten so that the wrong side is facing out. Insert the hook into the first stitch of the foundation chain and into the back loop of the corresponding stitch on the opposite edge. Yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook. Continue joining all the stitches across the edge until fully joined. Weave in all ends.

Repeat the pattern for the second mitten.
