Crochet Traditional Granny Square Pattern

Crochet materials and tools:

<> Crochet hook 3.5 mm 

<> Caron, Simply Soft –100% acrylic. Color A – yellow, Color B – white, Color C – blue.

Common abbreviations of crochet stitches (US):

ch – chain

SC – single crochet

DC – double crochet

sl st – slip stitch

st(s) – stich(es)

RS – right side

WS – wrong side

sp – space

Crochet traditional granny square pattern:

Color A:

Round 1 (RS): Form a magic ring, ch 3 (count as DC), 2 DC into the ring, ch 2, [3 DC, ch 2] – repeat 3 times . Tighten the ring. Join with sl st to top of starting ch 3. Turn counterclockwise.

Round 2 (WS): sl st to ch-2 space. Ch 5, SC into the same ch-2 sp. [Ch 5, SC in next ch-2 sp, ch 5, SC into the same ch-2 sp] – repeat 3 times. Ch 5,  join with sl st into the 1st ch of beginning ch 5.

Color B: 

Change the color by pulling the new yarn through the working loop, otherwise, continue crocheting with the old one.

Turn counterclockwise.

Round 3 (RS): sl st to ch-5 sp. Ch 3 (count as DC), 2 DC into the same ch-5 sp, [3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC] in next ch-5 sp. *3 DC in next ch-5 sp,  [3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC] in next ch-5 sp – repeat from * 3 times. Join with sl st to top of starting ch 3. Turn counterclockwise.

Round 4 (WS): sl st in the space between sets of  3 DC clusters, ch 5, SC in next ch-2 sp, ch 5, SC into the same ch-2 sp, * ch 5, SC in the space between sets of  3 DC clusters, ch 5, SC in next space, ch 5, SC in next ch-2 sp, ch 5, SC into the same ch-2 sp – repeat from * 3 times. Ch 5, SC in next sp, ch 5, join with sl st into the 1st ch of beginning ch 5.

Change the color, Turn counterclockwise.

Color C:

Round 5 (RS):  sl st to ch-5 sp. Ch 3 (count as DC), 2 DC into the same ch-5 sp, 3 DC in next ch-5 sp, [3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC] in next ch-5 sp. * [3 DCin next ch -5 sp] – repeat 3 times, [3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC] in next ch-5 sp – repeat from * 3 times. 3 DC in next ch-5 sp. Join with sl st to top of starting ch 3.

Turn counterclockwise.

Round 6 (WS): sl st in the space between sets of  3 DC clusters, ch 5, SC in next sp,  ch 5, SC in next ch-2 sp, ch 5, SC into the same ch-2 sp, * [ch 5, in next space] – repeat 4 times, ch 5, SC in next ch-2 sp, ch 5, SC into the same ch-2 sp – repeat from * 3 times. [Ch 5, SC in next sp] – twice, ch 5, join with sl st into the 1st ch of beginning ch 5.

Continue crocheting the square until it reaches the desired size. Weave in all ends.
