Crochet Turtleneck Dickey Pattern
Pattern Sections
A turtleneck dickey is a practical alternative to a scarf or a cowl that has a tight fit around the neck and a base that rests on the shoulders and covers the upper section of the chest. Crochet dickey is an excellent option for kids and adults alike who prefer to wear a lighter coat but want to protect the neck and chest from wind gusts. If you like to run outside during late Autumn and early Spring a dicky might become your “must-have” clothing piece for any outdoor exercise.
For some, it might look complicated to crochet but I can assure you that it’s not the case. I have included a visualization scheme and a formula for how to calculate the number of stitches for any age. You only need to know single and double crochet stitches and minor iterations of them.
If you like this crochet dickey, then I’d also recommend to crochet a matching fisherman’s rib hat to get a fun and cozy crochet set.

Crochet dickey pattern:
Collar:
Ch 23. The chain must measure now about 14 cm. Chain more if needed. If your child’s age is over 6-7 years, make your chain 15 cm.
Row 1: ch 1, starting in the second loop from hook, 23 sc. Turn.
Row 2: ch1, sc, 21 sc blo, sc. Turn (23 sts)
Repeat Row 2 until the stretched piece measures the child’s head circumference length. The unstretched piece measures 36-38 cm. Finish crocheting when a tail and a working yarn are on the same side.
Ch1 and join two edges with sl st seam: Pick up the back loop of the nearest chain and pick up the chain that is further from you. Pull the yarn through 2 loops and the original loop on the hook (make a slip stitch). Keep repeating all the way across until you reach the end.
Shoulder area:
From this point, we start working in rounds.
Round 1: Holding collar wrong side out, ch1, sc in each row around.(48 sts)
Do not worry if you get a different number than I got, the only condition is to have the even number of stitches. Join with sl st.
Use the following formula to calculate any size of the dickey:
Total 48 sts.
48-4 raglan stitches= 44 sts
44/10 =4.4 sts
4.4*2=8.8 ~9 sts – one shoulde, and 9 sts another shoulder.
44 -9 -9 = 26 sts
26 /2 =13 sts front part and 13 sts back part.
Place stitch markers as follows: count 7 sts, pm, 9 sts, pm, 13 sts, pm, 9 sts, pm, 6 sts.
Round 2: ch3, dc into the same stitch, 6 dc in next 6 sts, 3 dc in next st (remove stitch marker), 9 dc in next 9 sts, 3 dc in next st (remove stitch marker), 13 dc in next 13 sts, 3 dc in next st (remove stitch marker), 9 dc in next 9 sts, 3 dc in next st (remove stitch marker), 6 dc in next 6 sts, join to first dc.

At this point, the length of my raglan line reached 8 cm which is perfect for a 4-5-year-old child. If you are crocheting dickey for 2-3 years old, the perfect length is 7 cm.
