Ripple hat for women crochet pattern:
Crochet body of the ripple hat
Ch 54 (multiple of 12 + extra 6). Measure your chain. For the perfect fit, the chain should measure approximately 33–35 cm (13–13.7″).
Row 1: Ch1, starting in the second loop from hook make SC in next 24 chains. (This will be the height of the folded brim). [HDC in next 6 chains, sl st in next 6 chains] – twice. Leave the last 6 chains unworked. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, [sl st blo in next 6 sts, HDC blo in next 6 sts] – twice, SC blo in next 24 sts. At the end of each even-numbered row, work the very last stitch through both loops (front and back) instead of in the back loop only. This helps to make the edge of the hat less stretchy and more structured. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, SC blo in next 24 sts. [sl st blo in next 6 sts, HDC blo in next 6 sts] – twice. Sl st in 6 chains. Turn. To make a smooth transition, work the first of the last 6 sl sts by inserting the hook into the horizontal bar (the ch-1 of the previous row) and into the next stitch at the same time, yarn over, pull through both loops to complete the slip stitch. Then complete the remaining 5 sl sts as usual.
Row 4: Ch1, sl st blo in next 6 sts, [HDC blo in next 6 sts, sl st blo in next 6 sts]. SC blo in next 24 sts. Do not forget to work the very last stitch through both loops. Turn.
Row 5: Ch1, SC blo in next 24 sts. [HDC blo in next 6 sts, sl st blo in next 6 sts] – twice. Leave the last 6 sts unworked. Turn.
Row 6: Ch 1, [sl st blo in next 6 sts, HDC blo in next 6 sts] – twice, SC blo in next 24 sts. Turn.
Row 7: Ch 1, SC blo in next 24 sts.
Row 8: Ch1, sl st blo in next 6 sts, [HDC blo in next 6 sts, sl st blo in next 6 sts]. SC blo in next 24 sts. Do not forget to work the very last stitch through both loops. Turn.
Repeat Rows 5-8 until your hat measures desired width. For a head circumference of 58 cm I crocheted about 45-46 cm before joining.
Sewing edges of the ripple hat:
Fold the hat in half with the wrong side facing out, aligning the edges. Position it so that the working yarn is on the edge farthest from you.
Insert the hook under the chain of the first row on the edge closest to you and through the back loop on the opposite edge. Yarn over and pull through both loops and the stitch on the hook to make a slip stitch.
Slip stitch the two edges together all the way to the top. Cut the yarn, leaving a 20–25 cm tail.
Thread a yarn needle with the tail. Weave the needle through the horizontal bars created by the ch-1 of every 4th row around the top edge. Gently pull the yarn to cinch the top closed. Fasten off securely and weave in the end.
