Nomad beanie crochet pattern:

Leave a tail of at least 20–25 cm (8–10″) — you’ll use it to close the crown at the end. Ch 45. Measure your chain. If you’re making a hat with a folded brim, the chain should measure approximately 31–32 cm (12.25–12.5″).

If 45 chains are not enough to reach that length, add more chains as needed.

Row 1: Ch1, starting in the second loop from hook make SC in next 16 chains. (This will be the height of the folded brim). *Insert the hook into the next chain and draw up a loop, yo, insert the hook into the same chain and draw up a loop, yo and pull through all four loops on your hook. Repeat from * until you have 8 chains.

The last 8 unworked chains should measure approximately 5 cm (2″).
You may have more or fewer unworked chains — the only requirement is that the number of unworked stitches is divisible by 2. In this example, there are 8.

Next, sl st in the next 4 chains. Turn. (Leave 4 chains unworked.)

Row 2: Ch 1, sl st blo in next 4 sts, SC blo in next 37 sts. At the end of each even-numbered row, work the very last stitch through both loops (front and back) instead of in the back loop only. This helps to make the edge of the hat less stretchy and more structured. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, SC blo in next 16 sts. *Insert the hook into the back loop of the next stitch and draw up a loop, yo, insert the hook into the same stitch and draw up a loop, yo and pull through all four loops on your hook. Repeat from * until you have 8 stitches. Sl st blo in next 4 sts, sl st in next 4 chains, turn.

Row 4: Ch1, sl st blo in next 8 sts, SC blo in next 37 sts. Do not forget to crochet the very last stitch through both loops.

Row 5: Ch1, SC blo in next 16 sts. *Insert the hook into the back loop of the next stitch and draw up a loop, yo, insert the hook into the same stitch and draw up a loop, yo and pull through all four loops on your hook. Repeat from * until you have 8 stitches. sl st blo in next 4 sts. Turn.

Row 6: Ch 1,  sl st blo in next 4 sts, SC blo in next 37 sts. Crochet the very last stitch through both loops.

Row 7: Ch 1, SC blo in next 16 sts. *Insert the hook into the back loop of the next stitch and draw up a loop, yo, insert the hook into the same stitch and draw up a loop, yo and pull through all four loops on your hook. Repeat from * until you have 8 stitches. Sl st blo in next 8 sts, turn.

Row 8: Ch1, sl st blo in next 8 sts, SC blo in next 37 sts. Do not forget to crochet the very last stitch through both loops.

Repeat Rows 5-8 until your hat measures desired width. Finish crocheting with Row 3. For a head circumference of 57 cm I have crocheted 44-45 cm.

Sewing hats edges:

Fold the hat in half, aligning the edges. Position it so the working yarn is on the edge farthest from you.  Insert the hook underneath the chain of the first row of the fabric that is closest to you and through the back loop on the other side, yarn over and pull it through both loops and stitch on the hook. Slip stitch those two edges together till the very bottom. Weave in ends.

Thread a yarn needle with a new strand of yarn, or use the long tail left at the beginning. Weave the needle in and out around the top edge of the hat, working back and forth through the stitches. Gently pull the yarn to cinch the top closed. Fasten off securely and weave in the end.
